The daughter of a professional foxhunter, fisherman and part-time musician, Kasey Chambers grew up in a small fishing village in South Australia and the vast expanses of the desolate Nullarbor Plain. Kasey's career started when she began singing with her family in the 'Dead Ringer Band' which included dad Bill, mother Diane and brother Nash and saw them touring all over Australia by the time she was a teenager. It wasn't until she began her solo career that Kasey's path would lead her to become an Australian household name and receive accolades from around the world. Her last 4 albums have reached #1 and all 5 albums achieving platinum or multi-platinum sales. In 2008 Rattlin' Bones picked up the Aria award for Best Country Album, exceeded platinum sales and also received a whopping 5 Golden Guitar Awards at Tamworth including, 'Album of the Year', APRA 'Song of the Year' and 'Single of the Year'. Throughout her career Kasey has earned the respect of some musical giants such as Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yokham, Ben Harper and author/filmmaker Michael Moore to name a few. Eilen Jewell is a hot new name in the United States Americana genre, this Boston-based alternative country singer-songwriter is sweeping all before her as her albums receive huge attention and her live performances are winning her new fans at every show she plays. Eilen is touring Australia for the first time with her longtime band of Jason Beek (drums, harmony vocals), Jerry Miller (electric, acoustic, and steel guitars), and Johnny Sciascia (upright bass) who wed her elegantly unflinching songwriting with a rustic, pre-Beatles swagger that encapsulates vintage R&B, Midwestern garage rock, Chicago blues, and early rock and rockabilly, while maintaining the haunting, folk-inspired purity that first made her an artist to watch. Eilen is touring her new album With Sea of Tears combines which Eilen's swinging country roots with her love of 60's British Rock. The result will appeal to fans of Holly Golightly as well as Gillian Welch. The record features a drop-dead killer version of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' Shakin' All Over', which any Australian over 40 will know via Normie Rowe's smash hit version from 1965. 'Shakin' All Over' is the album's first single and will be the album's first video. "She is a remarkable singer: you'll understand why 'Eilen' rhymes with 'feelin'." - Doug Spencer, Weekend Planet, ABC Radio Alt-country singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier exploded on to the scene in 1999 following her self-released sophomore effort, Drag Queens in Limousines. The album had critics comparing her self-described 'country noir' to the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, John Prine, and, not surprisingly, Lucinda Williams. Embraced by critics, folkies, and No Depression fans alike, Gauthier's warmly candid treatment of her fringe-dwelling subjects rings true, as it never verges on sentimental; her characters' downtrodden lives are never coldly exploited. Acclaim has followed Mary Gauthier on every step of her remarkable journey. Her major breakthrough album came in 2005, Mercy Now was continuously 'discovered' and lauded for the two years following its release, earning mentions on a score of year end 'best of' lists. Her most recent release, Joe Henry-produced Between Daylight and Dark (2007) has been called "a triumph that should catapult her to the forefront of Americana singer/songwriters," The Junes. What can you say….they are a country swing supergroup formed in the wake of GIT and THE TOE SUCKING COWGIRLS, two of the finest female fronted bands in the land. Barely containing the talents of Sarah Carroll, Suzannah Espie and Gleny Rae Virus, THE JUNES write, sing and play with all the skill and style of their combined years in the business. These gals may travel around the country and around the world in other guises, singing other songs, but when THE JUNES get together, a cone of country power is raised wherever they are, and audiences are drawn to it like moths to a flame…….. helpless in the spell of the harmonies, the swing, and the sight of these beautiful women. Sal Kimber & The Rolln' Wheel. "Sal Kimber is one of Australia's best emerging songwriters Watch this space or better still, just listen.. great songs, true emotion and not afraid to have a laugh Sal Kimber is a real find. 'Sounds Like Thunder' is one of the most refreshingly honest records to come along in years, Sal Kimber is a rare talent". Gary Seven, Program Manager PBS 106.7 Kimber’s songs are distinctly Australian and she sings with such a flavor – with similarities here and there to the likes of The Waifs. Her gentle melodies and vocals amongst the twang of guitar and banjo demonstrated a perfect summer soundscape that you can’t help but like. Each song utilised acoustic guitar, banjo or electric guitar for characterisation and along with her unique and subtle voice, it was hard to fault her or her ensemble at all." Fasterlouder.com Sunday 28th March. Meeniyan Hall. Lil' Band o' Gold Mem $40 Adults $45 ($5 for Cajun meal) Windy Ridge wines available by-the-glass or bottle at cellar door prices. Lil Band O' Gold features some of the most influential musicians to ever have emerged from America's most important musical state. The outfit was assembled by vocalist and guitarist CC Adcock, who searched the swamps and flatlands of South Louisiana to form a band of his childhood heroes. This process was captured for the documentary The Promised Land: A Swamp Pop Journey which was a feature at the Tribeca, SxSW and Melbourne International Film Festivals. Touring Australia for the first time, the incredible array of performers in Lil' Band o' Gold will produce a certain type of magic rarely found in live music today. The band will headline at Byron Bay's Blues Festival and do a select number of shows along the East Coast, BUT the band has chosen their Meeniyan gig as the one and only Australian venue where they are going to deliver the whole 'Southern (USA) experience' to their audience. First, the band will cook Cajun food for you! We will then screen the documentary movie, 'The Promised Land' , a recent hit at the Melbourne International Film Festival, after which this supergroup will take to the stage and play for you! A truly unique, entertaining and intriguing night! Each member of Lil' Band O' Gold is a master of a separate style, both diverse and exciting and collectively they comprise a mix of unsurpassed talents. We are delighted to premiere this incredible act, and the Li' Band O Gold are:- CC Adcock - Lafayette born CC Adcock, a musician of meteoric talent, has packed a lot of living into his 35 years with long stints slinging guitar with Bo Diddley and Buckwheat Zydeco, two highly acclaimed solo records, two feature film scores, album productions and thousands of live shows worldwide. For many years CC has had a complete command of the influences of his region, bringing together old and young to nurture and further the true sounds of Acadiana. Considered a genius by many including legendary record producer Jack Nietzsche, CC has played and recorded with the best of them and is without doubt one of the South's brightest rising stars. CC is the founding member of Lil' Band O' Gold. Warren Storm - born in Vermillion Parish, Louisiana in 1937, Warren Storm is considered the "Godfather of Swamp Pop'. At the age of 68, his voice is still second to none. Warren has been responsible for dozens of national and regional hit records since he first broke the US charts in 1958 with 'The Prisoner Song', selling 250,000 copies. Working at the legendary Jay Miller studios in Crowley, Louisiana, Warren was also hired as the "in house" drummer, playing on numerous Blues hits for the likes of Lightning Slim, Slim Harpo, Lonesome Sundown, Lazy Lester, Carol Flan and many others. Warren is indeed a living legend and holds places in the Louisiana Hall of Fame and Gulf Coast Hall of Fame. He sings and plays drums for Lil' Band O' Gold. Steve Riley - grew up in the prairie town of Mamou, Louisiana, where French is spoken on the street; the national holiday is Mardi Gras and a poor family is one without a fiddler or accordion player. By the age of 12, Steve was considered an accordion prodigy and by 13 he had been snapped up by Cajun legend Dewy Balfa for his band. In 1991, Steve started his own band, Steve Riley and The Mamou Playboys, who have recorded seven albums, won countless awards and been nominated for three Grammy Awards. Steve is widely considered one of the world's premier accordion players. He sings and plays the accordion for Lil' Band O' Gold. Tommy McLain - Born in 1940 into a family of musicians, he is considered the founding father of Swamp Pop music. In 1966, with the Boogie Kings, he cut a record for Floyd Soileauis's Jin label that resulted in the multimillion-selling smash 'Sweet Dreams'. He has never stopped performing and has enjoyed much success and recognition the world over, touring with the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top and the Yardbirds. He has even found time to be ordained as a Catholic minister. He continues to spread his gospel of love and music on his weekly radio show on Radio Maria broadcast from Alexandria, Louisiana. Jazzman "Dickie" Landry plays his "own kind" of sax. When Dickie has to play he has to play and people such as Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, The Phillip Glass Ensemble, Laurie Anderson and The Talking Heads have reaped the rewards of his unique styling. He is also considered a pioneer of conceptual art and installations, having worked with Richard Serra, Gordon Matte-Clark and Rauschenberg in the early 60s. Born in Cecelia, Louisiana, Dickie is still revered there as the man who can do it all and fix any problem. At 68 years old he is rarely seen on any given night without his sax, wandering the Lafayette streets and sitting in with everyone. He plays saxophone for Lil' Band O' Gold. David Egan is one America's premier song writers, having written songs for Percy Sledge, Joe Cocker, Etta James, Johnny Adams, Mavis Staples, Irma Thomas, Marcia Ball, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and many others. David now writes songs, plays piano and sings with Lil' Band O' Gold. Lil' Buck Senegal is unquestionably one of the world's greatest living blues guitar players. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1940, Buck still lives in the same house on St. Charles Street. He has played with everyone from Percy Sledge to Alan Toussaint to Joe Tex, and most notably spent 14 years as guitar player for the undisputed "King of Zydeco", Clifton Chenier (playing on all of Clifton's Arhoolie recordings). Buck has recorded several solo Albums including the classic, 'The Buck Starts Here', helmed by Alan Toussaint. His classic cuts, 'Cat Scream', and 'Monkey in a Sack', recorded back in 1967 are considered by many to be the first funk tunes ever recorded. Pat Breaux has long been considered one of the greatest saxophonists forged from the South Louisiana Cajun honky-tonk scene. Pat has toured and performed with the likes of BeauSoleil, Red Beans & Rice and C.C. Adcock. He is the grandson of Cajun music pioneer Amade Breaux, who has been credited with writing Louisiana's unofficial state anthem "Jolie Blon". Pat plays saxophone and accordion for Lil' Band O' Gold. Richard Comeaux is flat out the best pedal-steel player in Louisiana and is currently signed to Capital Records with his band River Road. Richard plays pedal steel for Lil' Band O' Gold. 'Comeaux's pedal-steel playing, rarely heard in Louisiana acts these days outside of country bands, straddles those melodies like a graceful tightrope walker.' --Austin American Statesman. With great joy, Love Police continue to deliver the goodness with the return of the amazing OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW back to Australia in March and April 2010. The band first toured Australia early in 2009 and left audiences in awe of the musical tour de force that is Old Crow Medicine Show which left Brisbane’s Time Off Magazine to say “The band are shit-hot players, there’s no doubting it”. It’s fast & furious so bluegrass and folk lovers, hipsters and country fans, be prepared to get down, again, in a whole new way once these five boys from Nashville take to the stage. The band won the day at the ultra cool Golden Plains festival in Melbourne, the Oz country & roots festival CMC Rocks The Snowys and survived heavy rains in Gippsland at the Mossvale Park festival with dazzling delivery of musicianship, joy, humour and down right good times! Their club dates saw a two set evening on wonder and joy. The band has gone far beyond the label of "Americana" and kicks out good old bluegrass styled music with attitude. They abandon the overdone country theme of dead dogs and lost women for heart felt get-downs about homegrown weed and trailer dwelling meth heads. Expect about 2 hours of OCMS - they want to come back to Mossvale Park, and they want to play you a full-on rocking set or 2! Support Acts include JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE. To see OCMS in Melbourne it will cost you $75 - so come to Mossvale for just $50 and enjoy the experience of what is Old Crow Medicine Show! An Evening With Harry Manx Mem. / Conc. $45 Adults $48 Saturday 8th May, 8pm. Meeniyan Town Hall Windy Ridge wines available by-the-glass or bottle at cellar door prices.
